Estimated reduction in lemon production in Chile

In the 2021/22 marketing year, citrus production is down due to winter frosts in the Valparaíso, Metropolitana and O'Higgins regions. FAS Santiago estimates that lemon production will fall by 30% to 140,000 metric tons in 2021/22 under normal production conditions and rebound to 200,000 metric tons in 2022/23.

Lemon producing areas are located in the north and center of the country, from the Coquimbo region to the O'Higgins area. Lemon acreage has increased in all Chilean production areas in the last three marketing years. The Metropolitana region in central Chile, with 41.1% of the lemon acreage, is the largest region. Chile produces lemons for the domestic market during the summer months of December to March and for export during the winter months of June to September.
