Mexico's avocado exports rise against the trend

Mexican avocado exports performed well during the epidemic, with the United States being the largest market. According to data from the Mexican Ministry of Agriculture, from January to October 2020, Mexico exported 1.082 million tons of avocados, an increase of 4.9% over the same period of the previous year; exports fell by 7.2% to US$2.473 billion (approximately RMB 16.178 billion).

Alvaro Luque, CEO and President of Avocados From Mexico (AFM), Mexico’s avocado export organization, said: “The epidemic has separated the world into two situations. One is developing better, and the other is in crisis. Fortunately, the Mexican avocado industry belongs to The first situation."

Mexico's unique climate allows it to harvest avocados four times a year rather than once a year, as in most other regions. In 2011, China's imports of avocados were only 32 tons; by 2018, this number had exceeded 32,000 tons, achieving an amazing growth of a thousand times. In 2019, Mexican avocados accounted for 40% of the Chinese market, and China became one of the main markets driving the growth of Mexican avocado exports. But since then, sales growth of this item in China has slowed down.
