How to Grade Avocados – Export Standards, Electronic Sorting vs Roller Grader, and Key Considerations

Avocado Grading Methods

Avocado grading guide: export size standards (10 to 24 count, 4kg box), electronic weight sorting (±2g, 7–12 grades) vs roller grading (6 grades max). Used by customers in Peru, Ethiopia, Kenya. Learn why electronic sorters are preferred for export. Get quote

Introduction

Avocado is a nutrient-dense fruit grown in tropical regions. It contains high levels of healthy fats, protein, and various vitamins. To reach premium export markets, avocados must be uniformly graded – by size, weight, and quality. So how are avocados graded professionally? Let us introduce you to the process and standards.

Avocado Export Grading Standards

Avocados intended for export are typically sorted into 7–12 weight grades and packed in 4kg boxes. The most common export standard is based on fruit count per 4kg box – the higher the count, the smaller the fruit.

Common export grade table (4kg net weight per box):

Count

Weight Range (grams per fruit)

10

366 – 460 g

12

306 – 365 g

14

266 – 305 g

16

226 – 265 g

18

211 – 235 g

20

191 – 210 g

22

171 – 190 g

24

156 – 170 g

Example: Count 10 = maximum 10 avocados per 4kg box. Count 24 = 24 avocados per 4kg box.

Avocado Grading Methods

Avocados are generally classified into five quality tiers:

Grade

Use

Grade I & II

Export sales – premium markets

Grade III

Local market sales

Grade IV & V

Processing (jam, cosmetics, etc.)

To achieve Grade I and II for export, precise weight sorting is essential.

Two Main Grading Technologies

1. Electronic Weight Sorter (Recommended for Export)

The avocado electronic weighing and sorting machine sorts fruit by weight with ±2g accuracy. It can be configured for 7–12 weight grades – matching export requirements.

Key features:

  • ±2g accuracy – consistent pack weights – no giveaway

  • 7–12 weight grades – matches export grade tables

  • Gentle handling – low drop heights, soft cups – no bruising

  • Multi-lane – up to 4 lanes, up to 100,000 pcs/h

  • Anti-collision design – protects fruit at exits

Electronic sorters are now preferred by international avocado packers because they are more accurate and gentler on fruit.

Real customers:

  • Peru – Custom electronic avocado sorter (2 lanes, 50,000 pcs/h)

  • Ethiopia – Ordered a complete line: washing → drying → waxing → electronic weight sorting

  • Kenya – Ordered a complete line: washing → drying → waxing → electronic weight sorting

2. Roller Grader (Budget Alternative)

Roller avocado graders were once popular but have limitations:

  • Maximum 6 size grades – cannot meet 7–12 grade export requirements

  • Lower weight accuracy – sorts by diameter, not weight

  • Higher bruising risk – more mechanical contact

⚠️ If your budget is limited, a roller grader can still work for smaller operations or local markets. However, for export-grade precision, electronic sorting is strongly recommended.
