Chilean avocado production increased this season

Chilean avocado Committee predicts that the output of Chilean avocado will reach about 220000 tons in 2021 / 22 quarter, an increase of 57% over 140000 tons in 2020 / 21 quarter.

This forecast is based on ideal climatic conditions and fruit setting rate. The last season was strongly affected by frost and drought, and the output declined, which caused prices to rise.

About 120000 tons of the total output will be exported, the committee said. Western Europe is one of the major markets, accounting for 75% of total avocado exports in the previous quarter.

Francisco Contardo, executive director of the Avocado Committee, said: “As an industry organization, we are very optimistic about the forecast for the new season. Although we still have to face the labor and logistics difficulties caused by the epidemic restrictions, our production will increase by 57%.”"In the future, we hope to consolidate Chile's avocado share in the export market and continue to provide domestic consumers with avocado known for its high nutritional value," he said.

Chile is still an important player in the avocado industry on a global scale. Ten years ago, the country was listed as the second largest exporter of avocados in the world, but it is currently overtaken by the Netherlands, Peru and Spain, relegated to fifth place.
