A good harvest of walnuts

According to a report recently released by the U.S. Department of agriculture, China's Walnut (shelled) production is expected to reach 1.02 million tons in 2020 / 21 (2020 / 09-2021 / 08), with a year-on-year increase of 2%.

Due to the favorable climate conditions, Xinjiang and Yunnan, the top two production areas in China, welcomed the bumper harvest. However, the northern walnut producing areas, including Shanxi, Shaanxi, Hebei and Gansu, suffered severe frost weather during the flowering period. Not only did the walnut yield decline, but also the fruit size was slightly smaller than in previous years. Do you know any methods to quickly sort walnut size? Walnut sizer is based on the diameter of the walnut to classify the dried walnut into different grades; the quality of the sorted dried walnut is improved, and it is more popular with consumers.

It is now at the beginning of the new season. According to Walnut traders, the purchase price (with shell) of walnuts in Yunnan Province this quarter was 13.5 yuan / kg, down nearly 20% compared with the same period last year. With the steady increase of yield, the price of Walnut in China has a downward trend in recent years. The poor sales caused by the epidemic situation of Xinguan put more pressure on the price.

In terms of export, China has become a major walnut supplier in the international market. According to the data provided by China Customs, China exported 122000 tons of walnuts (with shells) in 2019, with a year-on-year increase of 240%. China's shelled walnuts are mainly sold to Kyrgyzstan, Turkey and Pakistan. Shelled walnuts are mainly exported to Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Japan.

On the import side, the US is still China's biggest supplier of walnuts, even though exports to China have been falling since 2012. Retaliatory tariffs, which took effect in 2018, have made American walnuts less competitive in China, where their market share is being rapidly filled by Chilean walnuts.
