The Chestnut Problem: When "Good Enough" Isn't Good Enough

For years, chestnut packers made do with a grading method that was never designed for chestnuts in the first place.

The roller classifier — a machine where stainless steel rollers carry fruit forward while gaps between rollers gradually widen — worked reasonably well for round fruits like apples or potatoes. But chestnuts? Their irregular, asymmetrical shapes — ranging from round to oval with varying degrees of flattening — don't roll predictably. They shift, tilt, and wedge themselves into gaps that don't truly represent their size.

The result: grading accuracy of only 70%. Nearly one in three chestnuts ended up in the wrong grade — a costly error that directly impacts packer profitability.

China, the world's largest chestnut producer by far, has felt this challenge acutely. Thousands of chestnut packing houses needed a solution that combined speed with accuracy — without breaking the bank.

First Generation: The Roller Classifier — Borrowed Technology, Limited Results

The roller classifier was never built for chestnuts. It was adapted from other fruit grading lines.

How It Worked

The Problem

Grading mechanism

Rollers with gradually widening gaps

Chestnuts don't roll consistently — they shift sideways

Accuracy

~70%

Nearly 1 in 3 nuts misgraded

Handling

Irregular shapes can jam or crack

Design origin

Borrowed from round fruit grading

Not purpose-built for chestnuts

The grading efficiency was relatively high, but the accuracy simply wasn't there. For packers targeting premium markets, 70% accuracy meant too many rejected shipments and too much lost revenue.

Second Generation: The Drum Screen Grader — Purpose-Built for Chestnuts

Recognizing the limitations of roller technology, Fstsort engineers went back to the drawing board. Instead of adapting existing machines, they designed a grader specifically for chestnuts — one that accounts for their unique shape, size variation, and fragility.

The breakthrough came with the drum screen grader: a rotating drum with round holes instead of roller gaps.

Why round holes? Because chestnuts are round or oval. A round hole measures a chestnut's diameter from every angle as it tumbles inside the drum. Unlike roller gaps that can be fooled by an irregularly shaped nut passing through sideways, round holes ensure that only chestnuts smaller than the hole diameter can pass through — regardless of orientation.
How It Works
Chestnuts enter a rotating drum. As the drum turns, chestnuts gently tumble over round holes of increasing sizes. The smallest chestnuts fall through the first set of holes, medium chestnuts through the next, and the largest continue to the end. Each size category exits through a separate outlet.

Gentle tumbling is critical — no cracking, no jamming.

The bottom line: The transition from roller classifiers to drum screen graders isn't just a technology upgrade — it's a profitability upgrade. For packers still using manual grading or outdated roller classifiers, the drum screen grader offers a clear path to higher margins, better quality control, and expanded market access.

Complete Line Integration (Optional)

The drum screen grader can operate as a standalone sorter or be integrated into a complete chestnut processing line:

Section

Equipment

Function

Washing

Bubble washing tank

Removes dirt and debris; defective nuts float for easy removal

Brushing

Water sprinkles & brushes

Deep cleaning

Drying

Air blowers (or hot air dryer optional)

Removes surface moisture

Inspection

Roller inspection table

Manual removal of defective nuts

Grading

Drum screen grader

Automatic size sorting by diameter
