Cyclone Gabrielle destroys New Zealand's apple crop
New Zealand is dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Gabrielle which hit the country on Monday night. Prime Minister Chris Hipkins described Cyclone Gabriel as the worst weather event to hit the country in the last century. It is estimated that at least a third of the country's five million people have been affected. A state of emergency has been declared in the country.

Last year South Africa overtook Chile and the United States to become the second largest exporter of apples to China, and this year South African apple exports to China exceeded one million boxes. The first exports of South African pears to China were launched in mid-August and 12 batches, amounting to nearly 400 tonnes, have already been shipped, with the pace of South Africa's premium fruit entering the Chinese market accelerating. South Africa produces a number of pear varieties, with Packham's Triumph being the most productive, followed by Forelle.

Peruvian avocado exports grow steadily
Carlos Paredes Rosales, president of ProHass (Peruvian Avocado Association), said that exports in 2023 are expected to be around twice as high as in 2018, when Peru exported 338,549 tonnes. More importantly, the 2023 season will be smoother, avoiding supply peaks concentrated in a few weeks. 624,000 tonnes of Hass avocado will be exported from Peru in the 2023 season, up 12.5% compared to 554,498 tonnes in the 2022 season.
