Although date palm and red date are dates, but their appearance has a certain difference.The appearance of date palm is more like Chinese honey jujube, but its skin is much thicker. The taste of date palm is sweet, but they don't taste very sticky. According to the report of King Abdullah University of Science & Technology (kaust), the University's team of plant scientists has carried out a major project aimed at improving the production and protection of jujube globally, which is such a comprehensive research on the genome of jujube tree.

Date palms play an important role in many cultures. They can grow to 21-23 meters high and survive for hundreds of years. According to the statistics of the national palms and dates centre, Saudi Arabia produces about 1.1 million tons of jujubes every year, accounting for 15% of the world's jujube production. In addition, compared with 2017, the export of Saudi Arabia jujube increased by 11.7% in 2018.

Dr. rod wing, Professor of plant science and director of kaust desert agriculture center, said: "it usually takes 4-5 years for jujube trees to bloom and 10-15 years for them to bear fruit." Researchers at kaust desert agriculture center will next work to create high-quality genomes for other varieties of dates, bringing more potential benefits to date farming around the world.
